The Founder

Berlinda Tolbert

Why I Founded The Advocate Room— I didn’t start The Advocate Room because I had all the answers. I started it because I knew what it felt like to just be able to chop wood, carry water and to live with questions.
When I began caring for both of my parents, I felt inadequate. I was afraid I wouldn’t make the right decisions. I worried that their lives depended on choices I wasn’t sure I could make. It was a responsibility that came with sleepless nights, quiet panic, and the weight of love.
And I know I’m not alone in that.

Caregiving is not invisible, it is mis-seen, emotional, cultural, and deeply personal. It’s shaped by traditions, by family dynamics, by hope, and yes, sometimes grief. Yet too often, caregivers are treated as a workforce—not as people carrying legacy, trauma, and healing in equal measure.

The Advocate Room is my response to that. It’s a space where caregivers are seen—not just for what they do, but for what they feel. What it all looks like from their perspective.
It’s a place where cultural traditions are honored, where emotional truth is welcomed, and where healing is part of the mission.

We offer tools, stories, and support—but more than that, we offer recognition. We start with North America, but our lens is global. Because caregiving is not new—it’s ancestral. And it’s time we built systems that reflect that. The Advocate Room is not just a nonprofit, It’s a place where truth and love lives. And it’s personal.

Finally, I did not create The Advocate Room only to tell stories.
I created it because I lost myself.
And in the long silence of caregiving, I was remade.
Not returned to who I was — but expanded into someone I had never met.
This space is for those who are still in the silence.
Still dissolving. Still discovering.
Still becoming.

“ The Advocate Room embodies a supportive community where Caregivers are truly understood and valued. It offers a sense of belonging and reassurance, knowing that others share similar experiences and challenges. This environment fosters personal growth and encourages open dialogue, making it an essential resource for anyone navigating the complexities of caregiving.

Additionally, the Advocate Room serves as a vital platform for sharing resources, practical advice, and emotional encouragement among caregivers. By connecting with others who understand the unique journey of caregiving, members are empowered to face challenges with greater strength and confidence.”

“To me, the Advocate Room is a space that embraces both sides of this role: the devotion we give to the people we care for and the commitment we must also give to ourselves. It is a reminder that caregiving should never be done alone and that advocacy, when shared, creates resilience, connection and hope.

But the Advocate Room also reminds me that caregivers need support, too. True advocacy includes caring for your own well-being, setting boundaries, seeking guidance, finding community and giving yourself permission to rest and heal. When we advocate for ourselves, we become stronger, more grounded and more capable of advocating for those who depend on us.”

Our Values

We Believe...Caregivers Deserve Health.
We believe caregivers must be emotionally and physically well — not depleted, dismissed, or forgotten.

We Believe...Wellbeing Is Non‑Negotiable.
We provide tools that protect caregivers’ emotional clarity, brain health, and physical resilience.

We Believe...No One Should Sacrifice Their Health to Care for Another.
Love should not cost a caregiver their body, mind, or future.

We Believe...Dignity for Both the Giver and the Receiver.
We honor the truth that those receiving care would never want the caregiver’s wellbeing to be the price paid.

We Believe...Healing as a Birthright.
Caregivers deserve restoration, support, and spaces that rebuild them from the inside out.

Our Focused Purpose

The Advocate Room exists to protect the health and well-being of current, emerging, and past caregivers and healthcare advocates. Everything we create is designed to support their healing, strengthen  their resilience, and restore their inner lives.

We focus on:

  • Healing Practices that nurture the whole person.
  • Recovery after caregiving has ended.
  • Tools, methods, and rituals that restore the caregiver's mind, body, and spirit.
  • Programs that are science-based and supported by data.

We also honor the cultural and ancestral roots of caregiving through The Legacy of Care. These stories help caregivers understand the work they do is noble, inherited, and deeply connected to generations before them. Together, these elements offer a more complete understanding of who caregivers truly are and affirm the full humanity of those who give care.

The Future of Caregiving

Gen Z and Millennials are not just “future caregivers” — they are current caregivers, culture‑shapers, and the generation that is the "now".
Caregiving is changing — and a new generation is leading the way.
Young adults are stepping into caregiving earlier than ever. Their courage, creativity, and emotional honesty are reshaping what care looks like in families and communities. Caregiving at 18, 25, 32 or 39 carries its own truth — the mix of love, fear, responsibility, and resilience.

If you’re a young caregiver, your story matters to The Advocate Room.

As we listen and learn, The Advocate Room is creating a space for Young Caregiving Voices — a growing collection of experiences from young caregivers across cultures and communities. Your stories help protect the wellbeing of future caregivers and guide the programs we will offer in the years ahead.

At The Advocate Room, we believe that the future of caregiving must be rooted in wellness. Your experiences help us understand what young caregivers need to stay emotionally grounded, supported, and seen. Each month, The Advocate Room highlights up to three stories from young caregivers whose experiences illuminate courage, creativity, and wellness in action.
